After success on Broadway Warren Stevens began his career in Hollywood in the 50s. Stevens found regular work as a character actor on film and television with over 100 roles to his names over the decades. Among his more than 40 films, the actor appeared in The Barefoot Contessa, Gunpoint, Madigan, Red Skies of Montana and Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell. He is probably best known for his role as Doc Ostrow from the classic 1956 sci-fi Forbidden Planet, which had a big influence on Star Trek.

And a decade later Stevens found himself on Star Trek, playing Kelvan, the leader of an expedition from the Andromeda Galaxy in the episode “By Any Other Name.” He also appeared in episodes of The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, The Man From UNCLE, and many more series. His most recent appearances were with Lou Diamond Phillips, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Majors in the 2004 TV western The Trail to Hope Rose and a 2006 episode of ER.

Grey, who among other things pushed for the successful revival of the Star Trek franchise under J.J. Abrams, extended his deal with Paramount to lead at least through 2017. Grey took over right as Viacom was splitting up its film and television units to create Paramount and CBS Television as separate companies. He also decided to undo efforts to have Emmy-winning writer Erik Jendresen write a Star Trek film prequel, and instead lured Abrams in to create a reboot featuring Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

Grey started producing television in 1986 with talent manager Bernie Brillstein to create Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, launching with the early Fox hit “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.” He would gain prominence in later years for his company’s work on HBO hits like “The Larry Sanders Show” and “The Sopranos,” and would survive a later legal batter with Garry Shandling who claimed Grey took writers off his programs to use elsewhere without compensating the comedian. The two would settle out of court.

Since 1995, Paramount has made $22.5 billion at the box office, according to The Numbers. However, that finishes fourth behind Warner Bros. ($28.6 billion), Walt Disney Pictures ($26.8 billion) and Sony Pictures ($24.3 billion). Yet, Paramount has surged in recent years.

In 2009, Paramount finished third in box office with $1.46 billion behind Warner Bros. ($2.13 billion) and Twentieth Century Fox ($1.461 billion). Yet, it achieved that through far fewer movies, averaging $91.3 million. Warner Bros. averaged $59.2 million while Fox averaged $63.5 million.

Paramount moved up to second in 2010 with $1.72 billion, behind the $1.88 billion from Warner Bros. Yet again, Paramount averaged more success with its films, averaging $96 million each while Warner Bros. averaged $58.6 million.

This year, through last weekend, Paramount is clinging to the box office lead with just a few weeks left. It has grossed $1.74 billion, ahead of the $1.66 billion from Warner Bros. Although Warner earned a box office-leading $381 million from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” Paramount continues to dominate on average box office for each picture. Paramount is grabbing $82.8 million per release while Warner Bros. is managing with $44.8 million.

Grey’s goal in the next five years is to remove its dependency on partnerships with other studios to create hits, and instead developing or continuing its own ideas. That will come into clear view as the Marvel deal slowly fades, as well as jobs with Dreamworks.

Paramount countered the departure of Dreamworks animation by creating its own animated film, “Rango.” While domestic box office fell short of the $135 million budget for the film, the $123 million take showed that Paramount could create CGI products without Dreamworks.

Those were the exact words Steven Moffat used while he and Who star Matt Smith were guests on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Richard Bacon Show earlier today.

The question of that controversial Doctor Who movie “reboot” being planned by Harry Potter director David Yates came up again, and this is what Moffat said:

David (Yates) was talking a little out of turn, there; a very, very brilliant director but no the film as described by him, of course we’re not going to do that—a film that contradicts the television series, it would be a heathen thing to do … I would be ‘beheaded’ to do such a thing!

It would be wonderful to do a Doctor Who film, but when and if we did—and hopefully we will be doing it—it will be very much an offshoot of the television series and we’ll be part of it, and it will star the television Doctor, of course—anything else would be heresy!

Heresy indeed! We’re definitely on the side of Steven Moffat on that subject: A Doctor Who movie should be an offshoot of the beloved sci-fi TV series. You just can’t brush aside almost 50 years of intricate and rich, colorful storytelling just like that.

The Rebellion. Take that, Imperial tyranny!

Eight years ago, the MMO started out with good reviews and a fan base eager to craft characters from more than 32 professions. But SWG’s numbers dwindled when players balked at how difficult and time-consuming it would be to become a Jedi. And then, in 2005, Sony simplified gameplay by cutting the number of character professions to nine. In addition, in what seemed to be a move toward competing with World of Warcraft, the game shifted toward more intensive combat, which meant players lost the ability to interact and fight at the same time. SWG lost players and never recaptured them.

Still, some players held on to SWG because they loved its “sandbox” nature, that is, the ability to go anywhere in the world, not bound by the limits of storytelling. Fans also enjoyed its crafting customization, player-made cities and its economy.

But the lack of players was only one of the reasons SWG folded. December 15 also happens to be the end date of a licensing agreement between LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment.

But more importantly, SGW shut its virtual doors to prevent competition from LucasArts’ upcoming MMO from Electronic Arts and BioWare, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Based on the extremely successful (and absolutely fabulous) videogames, The Knights of the Old Republic and The Knights of the Old Republic 2, SW:TOR opens on Dec. 20. Early reviews say the videogame takes the best of Star Wars and mixes it with the best of World of Warcraft.

Best of all, anyone in SW:TOR who wants to be a Force user can be. SW:TOR is set in the days of the Old Republic, when Jedi and Sith were legion.

There’s a lesson in SWG’s ending here: if you’re an MMO based on a property as awesome as Star Wars, just be yourself and don’t try to compete with Warcraft.

Series star Jason O’Mara tweeted this week that Fox won’t decide whether or not to pick up the show for a sophomore season until 2012.
“Decision to pick up #TerraNova for S2 deferred to New Year by @FOXBroadcasting. Everyone involved remains confident and optimistic,” he Tweets.
It’s reported that Fox is going to wait and see how Alcatraz and Touch do in the ratings before making a decision on Terra Nova.

Bad news is: Benicio Del Toro (The Wolfman) is out of the running as Star Trek’s next villain. Good news is: Khan Noonien Singh will be the Big Baddie Capt. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will face in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Trek sequel.

The stunning news came in the wake of a cryptic statement Abrams recently made to HitFix, saying that Latino Review’s claims that Del Toro had already been cast in the role made famous by the late, great Ricardo Montalban’s manly pecs in the 1967 Star Trek classic episode ”Space Seed,” and later again with great panache in 1982′s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, were “not true.”

Vulture reports that negotiations with Del Toro actually fell through last Wednesday over a question of money. (Um, when is it not about that?)

They also heard “from a highly placed source” that it is indeed Khan who will be the Trek sequel’s Big Baddie.

(Which makes us wonder if Chris Pine will have to practice The Shat’s iconic ”Khhhannn” scream … But then again, since Abrams’ films are now taking place in a new parallel-universe, alternate-reality thingy, the Khan Noonien Singh our brave new bold Capt. Kirk would meet would be the ”Space Seed” Khan, not the Wrath of Khan Khan. But we digress.)

But what do you guys think? Are you disappointed or relieved that Benicio Del Toro is not going be in the Star Trek sequel? Are you excited that Khan now seems the likely villain chosen to face off against Kirk, Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the Enterprise crew? Though he wasn’t exactly the most likely of choices, Kenneth Branagh managed to turn Marvel’s Thor into a fun, blockbuster addition to the Marvel movie canon. His name won’t be on Thor 2 when it hits theaters in 2013, but Branagh says that if the timing were right, he’d love to go back to the Marvel universe.

In a new interview promoting a number of projects, including the acclaimed new release My Week With Marilyn, which sees him return to the big screen as an actor, Branagh confirms that it was really only timing that kept him from returning to the world of Marvel’s God of Thunder.

For Branagh, directing Thor was a chance to do something he’s never done before in all his years of Shakespeare adaptations and indie films: helm a massive production.

“Across 20 years of making films, I hadn’t spent a significant amount of time in that community, and I wanted to do that,” he says.

“Of all the American comics, Thor was the only one I was really familiar with from my childhood, and it intrigued me, maybe because it was a bit more European, with those Viking helmets and its basis in Norse myth. The scale was exciting, and I did love the character and the story. It had depth and gravity in addition to being an entertaining ride.”

Though Patty Jenkins will be taking on Thor 2, Branagh calls his time working with Marvel a “joy” and says he’d love to go back.

“I certainly wouldn’t rule out a return to Marvel; we had an excellent collaboration.”

So he liked Thor because of its European vibes, but Thor is taken for a while. If Branagh made it back to comic book movies, what would he do? Maybe the bigwigs at Marvel could go ahead and put him in charge of that rumored Doctor Strange movie and get that thing rolling.

Speaking to North Hollywood’s Patch, the actress who played Counsellor Deanna Troi on seven seasons of Star Trek: TNG and four films talked about the possibility of seeing a version of the Next Generation cast and crew on the new Star Trek films; about wishing they’d done more Next Gen movies; and about her belief that the beloved sci-fi series (which will turn 25 next year) could also get the reboot treatment after the studio’s finished with the new, current ones.

Here’s the interesting bit:

PATCH: Would you hope to see a version of The Next Generation in the new Star Trek movies?

SIRTIS: I don’t think that’s going to happen. I would love to because I never wanted the job to end in the first place. This was my job of my life. I loved my seven years on it. I loved doing the four movies that we did, but it’s not going to happen. As we were the young kids who came along after the original Star Trek, now it’s the next next generation and I wish them all the best.

PATCH: So you would have done one more movie?

SIRTIS: I would’ve done 10 more movies

PATCH: A lot of us wanted you to!

SIRTIS: Yeah, I know. I know. I get this all the time from fans who miss seeing us in anything new, because they still watch us in reruns all the time.

PATCH: What if they cast new actors as the young versions of Troi, Picard and Riker, like they did for Kirk and Spock?

SIRTIS: Exactly. You never know because you’re right, after this spate of movies, they might decide to resurrect The Next Generation with us recast young, which would be amazing. I’d be fascinated to see who they picked to play me younger.

And so would we! So much so that our minds are just buzzing with the casting possibilities right now … (If we were to play the casting game here, let’s just say we wouldn’t mind seeing Firefly’s Morena Baccarin in the role.)

This is what Christian Bale recently revealed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, confirming that both he and director Christopher Nolan are bowing out of the franchise after the third film:

“I wrapped [up The Dark Knight Rises] a few days ago so that will be the last time I’m taking that cowl off. I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it’s all done. Everything’s finished. It’s me and [director] Chris Nolan—that will be the end of that Batman era.”

So what does that mean for Batman’s future?

Will Warner Bros. simply end the Dark Knight’s adventures then and there, or will they go for yet another reboot of the franchise in order to make Batman fit into the world of the recent Green Lantern movie and the highly anticipated Man of Steel (not due out until June 14, 2013), starring Henry Cavill as the new Superman?

With the recent rumors circulating that Warner Bros. and DC Comics are still very much interested in making that Justice League movie for around 2015/2016, they’ll have to recast the role—unless, of course, Christian Bale can be persuaded to reprise the iconic role of playboy billionaire Bruce Wayne by day and dark caped crusader Batman by night with a monstrous amount of cold, hard cash (which in all honesty we doubt Bale would accept).

Still, an amazing chapter will be closing with the departures of Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale—the best Batman ever, in our humble opinion—and we’re rather sad it’ll be all ending with The Dark Knight Rises.

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, show runner Steven Moffat confirmed we won’t see new episodes until at least August of next year.

“Doctor Whoin the summer? All that running down tunnels, with torches, and the sunlight streaming through your windows and bleaching out the screen? All those barbecues and children playing outside, while on the telly there are green monsters seething in their CGI-enhanced lairs? It’s just not right is it? Be honest,” Moffat says.”For me, as a kid, when the afternoon got darker and there was a thrill of cold in the air, I knew that even though summer was over, the TARDIS was coming back! So yes, that’s part of the plan, that’s part of the reason for this little delay. But it’s not the whole story.”

So it looks like a bit of a wait, but it should be worth it.

Plot Summary: While mapping the remains of a supernova, the Enterprise picks up a faint signal in an old code, repeating the word “terratin” twice. The Enterprise follows the source to the Cepheus system, where a power source on the only planet sends a burst of energy that destroys the ship’s dilithium crystals and momentarily paralyzes the crew. Immediately afterward, all organic material on the ship begins to shrink, including the crew. Spock estimates that everyone on board will soon be less than a centimeter tall. Seeking answers, Kirk beams down to the surface, where the transporter restores him to normal height. He discovers a miniature city, but the transporter’s automatic cycle beams him back up in the midst of a volcanic eruption before he can make contact. Back on the Enterprise, Kirk finds that the remaining crewmembers are ant-sized but that his bridge crew has been abducted to the miniature city. He threatens to destroy the inhabitants if his officers are not returned, but the crew reports that the seeming attack was a desperate gesture to get the Enterprise’s attention. The city’s inhabitants, the Terratins, are mutated humans from a lost colony called Terra Ten, but the planet’s increasing volcanic activity is threatening to destroy them all. Using the transporter to restore his crew to normal height and demanding that they bring up dilithium from the disintegrating planet, Kirk rescues the entire Terratin city to be relocated to a stable planet.

Analysis: “The Terratin Incident” feels very much like Star Trek for kids, which isn’t unreasonable given that this is the animated series, but it’s not nearly as well done as “Yesteryear” and seems like an odd fit with the decidedly adult-themed “Mudd’s Passion” which immediately preceded it when it aired. “The Terratin Incident” has adorable Lilliputian crewmembers and an adorable Lilliputian city, yet there’s no hint of parallel social commentary or even scientific interest. In the hands of a more sophisticated writer, there might have been a connection between the turbulence on the planet and the lives of the Terratins, some cause and effect concerning what is essentially an invasive species colonizing Cepheus, some warning of the dangers of making such radical changes to human biology, or at the very least some more solid scientific explanation for how human evolution so quickly permitted people to begin breeding in miniature.

Instead it’s all played for amusement, more like Horton Hears a Who than Gulliver’s Travels. The cleverest device in the entire thing is the explanation for why the organic-based uniforms shrink right along with the crew, though one would think there must be other ship’s systems based on algae or other plant material that would have been similarly affected. For that matter, the food in the dining hall should be shrinking on the plates…though I believe the plates are replicated just like the food, so mightn’t they contain recyclable organic matter as well? Sure, it’s amusing to watch a team of crewmembers pulling ropes (presumably plant-based) to work the transporter controls, but if Scotty manages to program the device to beam Kirk back automatically even after his communicator is destroyed, can’t he figure out a way to rig it for voice commands? Then there’s the scene in which Chapel falls into the experimental fish tank in sickbay and keeps shouting “Help!” – no efforts to shout suggestions or communicate anything useful – while Kirk ends up threading a needle and tossing it to her so he can pull her out. And Spock and Kirk measure in both centimeters and inches, something I’d expect to be standard on a 23rd century starship. The crew is definitely not at its sharpest dealing with this emergency.

My favorite moment in the episode comes when Kirk, now restored to full size, warns the crew to go to the far bulkhead so he doesn’t accidentally step on anyone while crossing the bridge. But he then behaves rather uncharacteristically, threatening to blow up the miniature city and giving a demonstration of the Enterprise’s phasers before he’s bothered to ask what’s going on down there or whether there’s a peaceful solution to be negotiated. Once Kirk realizes the Terratins mean no harm, the crew finds a planet on which to dump the Terratin city, but it’s all rather rushed…how does the crew know that in this new environment, the Terratins won’t start growing instead of shrinking? Had the animated series lasted a bit longer, the Enterprise could have returned and found a Brobdingnagian human culture to whom they would appear like ants.

Unlike many Trek fans, Pegg didn’t start out with either the original series or with Star Trek: The Next Generation. He entered the world of Star Trek while watching the animated series as a child. “It was my gateway into Star Trek because I didn’t actually start watching the original series until I was about nine,” he said. “I definitely came across the cartoon first.”

When portraying Scotty, Pegg did not want to channel James Doohan. “I certainly didn’t want to do an impression of James Doohan [but] approach it like [he] did. I’m going to say ‘this is the character and this is how I am going to play it.’”

Even though Star Trek XI showed a humorous Scotty, Pegg would like to show a more serious side of the engineer in Star Trek 2. “When I took the role of Scotty, I never looked at him as a comic character as such,” said Pegg. “He has always been a whimsical character, because of his background, and is almost like an ethnic minority on board ship. There is something lyrical and fanciful about him. There is something about him that has whimsy; they all do at times even Spock. But I always thought that was what was in the script, he was marooned on that planet for a long time and he got on the ship and everything was kicking off and his reaction was almost like our reaction to it all. So yeah I absolutely hope so. I don’t think Scotty is a comic character at all. In this Star Trek he was thrust into everything, and he learned all this stuff about his own discoveries. He was brought on board the ship where everything was crazy and for him, that was a comic situation.

“I would like to hope that in future adventures he can find the sort of depth and seriousness that James Doohan had to tackle in the series.”

Saldana and Kardashian will appear as guest judges in the ninth season of the show, along with Christina Ricci and Malin Ackerman. They will be critiquing twenty aspiring designers.

Michael Kors and Nina Garcia are permanent judges on Project Runway, which is hosted by Heidi Klum.

For those not attending Comic-Con, The Captains makes its world premiere on July 22 at 8:00 P.M. EDT on EPIX and EpixHD.com. The showing will be part of “Shatnerpalooza,” which will also include William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet, the first six Star Trek movies and various movies and television show guest appearances featuring Shatner.

EPIX announced that a preview of The Captains would be shown at Comic-Con on Friday, July 22. In addition, William Shatner will talk about his documentary and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘s Avery Brooks will join Shatner on a Comic-con panel moderated by Kevin Smith where exclusive clips will be shown and the audience can participate in a Q&A session.

According to a press release, “Following the panel, Shatner will participate in EPIX Live from Comic-Con, an online Q&A on EpixHD.com which will allow fans across the U.S. to interact with the iconic writer-actor-producer-director. EPIX Live from Comic-Con with William Shatner will be produced by EPIX in partnership with San Diego affiliate, Cox Communications, which carries EPIX as part of its ‘Movie Pak.’” offering.

“Comic-Con attendees will be invited to see The Captains on EpixHD.com as part of a two-week free trial offer.”

IDW Publishing received permission from 20th Century Fox TV, the pilot’s producer, to show the pilot.

Locke & Key will be screened on July 22 at 10:30 A.M. in Room 8, and will be followed by a panel discussion in Room 9. The panel will include Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, Josh Friedman, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

According to an IDW ad, “This one-time-only screening of the entire pilot will show you just what a void there will be on your TVs this fall.”

High expectations for the J.J. Abrams sequel were anxiety-provoking for Giacchino. “Doing that score was a huge nightmare for me,” he said. “I was so excited up to the point where I actually had to sit there and do it. Then I was like, ‘Oh, my god. What do I do?’”
Added pressure came from Giacchino himself, because he was a Star Trek fan. “Not only did I have everyone else’s expectations, but I had my own expectations because I grew up watching Star Trek,” he said. “I love the old series more than anything. I watched the movies of course. I went and saw all of those. So there was this huge thing where I felt, ‘Oh, this is totally wrong. I should not be doing this. Why am I doing this? This was a bad idea.’”

It took words from Damon Lindelof to calm down the composer. “I was talking to Damon about it and he was like, ‘You know, I think the problem is that you are thinking about it too much as Star Trek. It is not Star Trek. Let’s forget about Star Trek. It is the story about two guys who meet and become friends.’ Once he said that I was like, ‘That is it! It is that simple!’”

Giacchino is ready to work on a Star Trek movie again. “I would love to,” he said. “It depends on how all of the pieces fall. I would be happy to do another one. It was one of those things that when it ended I was like, ‘Ugh! Never again!’ But now that time has passed…”

Garrett Wang, who played the quiet, unassuming Harry Kim, enjoyed working with his co-actors and enjoyed their brand of humor. “When I look back upon the experience, what stands out most are the times we Voyager actors shared on the set when the camera wasn’t rolling,” said Wang. “I’ve always said that if we kept the cameras rolling between takes, and broadcast that footage as a half-hour reality show, it would be the highest rated show on television!”

“Each and every Voyager principal actor had a unique sense of comedy,” said Wang, “whether it was Bob Picardo‘s dry one-liners, Tim Russ‘s premeditated practical jokes, or Kate Mulgrew‘s random survey questions, the set of Voyager was definitely, at times, like being at a comedy club. In my opinion, to be funny, one must first be intelligent. Thus, I believe my fellow Voyager actors to be some of the most intelligent people I’ve ever worked with.”

Wang spoke about portraying Harry Kim, and his frustration that the ensign never received a promotion in seven years. “I mean, come on people! Kim was probed, beaten, tortured and held the distinction of being the first Voyager crew member to die and come back to life,” said Wang. “What more does a guy have to do to get promoted to Lieutenant for frak’s sake? To add further insult to injury, other crew members such as Tuvok (Russ) and Paris were being promoted, demoted and then re-promoted throughout the seven-year run of Voyager.”

During the fourth season, Wang phoned writer/producer Brannon Braga regarding that lack of a promotion. “Well, somebody’s gotta be the ensign,” replied Braga. Frustrated, Wang even went to Kate Mulgrew. “[I] frustratedly asked her why I wasn’t promoted yet,” said Wang. “In hindsight, this action on my part was hilarious because Kate Mulgrew had no more influence in promoting my character than a random person on the street. I would like to take the time to say that I had no influence on these Kim developments.”

Wang would have liked to have directed an episode of Voyager, but believes that his outspokenness doomed his chances of doing so on Voyager. “Berman informed us that he expected all actors portraying human roles to follow his decree,” said Wang. “He told us that we were to underplay our human characters. He wanted our line delivery to be as military — and subsequently devoid of emotion — as possible, since this, in his opinion, was the only way to make the aliens look real.

“Years after the initial lunch meeting, I made a comment off record to a TV Guide reporter on how upset I was over Berman’s ridiculous mandate of less emotion for the human characters. My wording to him at the time was, ‘I think the producers of Voyager did not take the risks to make the show as good as it could be.’ Even though I wasn’t really specific about what the issue was, that printed comment alone sealed the death of my ambitions to direct an episode of Star Trek.”

Wang had mixed emotions about the Voyager finale. “I think the first hour of the finale was fantastic, very exciting, well written, good pacing,” he said. “Everything was great about the first hour, but then the second hour it just seemed like it tied up all of the loose ends very quickly. So, the second half of the finale I was not happy about, and I especially didn’t like the fact that we ended the series in Earth’s orbit. We don’t even step foot on Earth. Hello! After seven years, I think the fans wanted to see us actually step foot on terra firma.”

Wang rarely acts nowadays, frustrated with the Hollywood system and the lack of opportunity. “I stopped acting mainly because I got jaded with the industry,” he said. “You would think that after putting in seven years as a regular that certain doors would be open to you. But once you’re done with your show, you’re pretty much back at square one, auditioning once again. Auditions were really few and far between mainly because of the onslaught of reality TV programming.”

Fans can see Wang at various conventions though, and is heavily involved in TrekExpo, FedCon and DragonCon. “I love these conventions,” said Wang. “I love going to these cons because I’m already a sci-fi fan, and also because I get a chance to give the fans out there who don’t know me in real life a little taste of who I am, who I am as Garrett Wang, as opposed to Harry Kim. The main difference is that Garrett Wang is showman, a host, a moderator, a standup comic all rolled into one when he’s on stage, and Ensign Kim is pretty straight-laced. So it’s great that people can see more of who I am.”

Koenig was the only one of the seven original series actors without a star and fans had campaigned to rectify that oversight.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the recipients today and in addition to Koenig, the following television and movie actors will be receiving stars next year:

Koenig’s star will now join those of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan and George Takei on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Recipients have five years from the date of selection to schedule their ceremonies.

Frakes acknowledged the importance of the fans who supported Star Trek: The Next Generation and its actors. “My position is if someone’s not going to enjoy being [at the convention], they shouldn’t show up,” he said. “I’ve seen people come to these and not realize that they were lucky to have these fans and we have a responsibility to thank them.”

Working on Trek was a blessing for Frakes, although it had its downside as well. “It changed my life,” he said. “How could I not be [a fan of Star Trek]? It’s a double-edged sword working in Star Trek, though. There’s not many acting jobs unless you’re Patrick Stewart, but I was lucky enough to find another craft in directing.”

Frakes would take on the role of Riker again if asked, and would prefer not to be replaced if a rebooted Star Trek: The Next Generation was done. “Gosh. I supposed I could be made younger,” he said, “but I plan to play Riker as long as I’m alive.”

Pegg and Nick Frost have already been mulling over the idea of a sequel and what it would take to make that sequel. “The reason I would make a sequel to Paul,” said Pegg, “and I’m sure Greg (Mottola) would probably agree, is because, ultimately, I don’t do my job for anybody but myself.”

The experience of making Paul was something that was very enjoyable for Pegg and he would like to revisit the experience. “The product of what I do is important, but the of making Paul was so much fun,” said Pegg. “I got to work with some amazing people, in an amazing place, and we had an amazing three months. It was life-changing, and I’d love to do that again. If we could think of a story that was absolutely justifiable, that was worth doing, I would do it again, but for that reason, so I could have that experience again and enjoy working with people, the camaraderie and the friendship.

“People often forget that there is a process that exists in film-making. It’s not just the product, there is the process of making a film, which is incredibly enjoyable. The product is the result of that, which everybody sees, but it’s not always why you do it. There is also the product of that, which is fame, which is really why you don’t do it. The chance to work with those people again would be wonderful.”

A story idea for a sequel to Paul has already crossed the minds of Pegg and Frost, but to pull it off, it would mean they would require a bigger budget for the sequel. “Nick and I have this idea that we had out on the way to Area 51 that was really funny,” said Pegg. “It was like oh, this could be great. It would cost an absolute fucking fortune. If it involved more than one Paul, it would mean that we’d have to have twice that budget again. The idea was it was called Pauls. Again, it was like From Dusk Til Shaun, that title is so good we have to make that film.”

Last week, Paul was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK and will appear on American store shelves  on August 9th.

Answering a fan question at the Calgary Expo in Canada, Shatner admitted that he would again not be in a J.J. Abrams Trek film. “I’ve been an acquaintance of J.J.,” he said. “But I’m afraid no, no, I will not be in Star Trek 2.”

Shatner is still keeping busy though, with books, documentaries and guest appearances on TV shows. His new book, Shatner Rules: Your Key to Understanding the Shatnerverse and the World at Large, will release in October. The Shatner-produced The Captains will air next month and Shatner will be a guest star on an episode of the USA comedy Psych, where he will play a con man father of a detective.

Plot Summary: The Enterprise arrives at the mining planet Motherlode to arrest Harry Mudd for fraud, swindling, and various other charges. They find Mudd peddling a love potion to lonely miners, who attack him after learning from Spock that Mudd is using a hypnotic lizard to pose as a willing female. Mudd surrenders to Kirk. When Nurse Chapel comes to examine him in the brig, he notes her interest in Spock and offers her a free dose of his love potion to distract her while stealing her Starfleet credentials. Rationalizing that she is conducting a scientific test, Chapel tries the love potion, which does not appear to work. She confronts Mudd, blowing up his potion capsules, which release their contents into the ship’s air ducts. He takes her hostage aboard a shuttle just as Spock becomes obsessed with her. Kirk follows him to a desert planet with Spock and must fight off rock monsters while the rest of the crew falls under the influence of the love potion. The landing party uses Mudd’s remaining potion to make the rock monsters fall in love with each other. Back on the ship, the potion wears off with the effect of inspiring hatred in those who previously felt attraction, leaving an irate Chapel to take Mudd’s confession when he winds up in the brig once more.

Analysis: Let me say from the outset that there’s really no defense for the Mudd episodes – neither “Mudd’s Passion” nor its two original series predecessors, “Mudd’s Women” and “I, Mudd.” The sexist attitudes of the previous two stories are repeated here, this time by taking a regular character and showing her to be so desperate for a man that she’ll try to force him to find her attractive against his will and quite possibly against his biology. Moreover, the implicit heterosexism of “Mudd’s Women” is made explicit here: the love potion inspires friendship between two men or two women, and only generates erotic feelings between members of the opposite sex. According to Harry Mudd, all men just want sex with attractive women, while all women want love from men even if the men don’t appreciate them for themselves…and the rest of the characters go right along with these beliefs.

That said, I have a very shameful love for this episode. It’s partly because, even with the heterosexual disclaimers, there are lovely intimate moments between Kirk and Spock – first when Kirk refuses to let Spock go off to rescue Christine without accompanying him so he can protect him, and later on the planet, when a love potion-addled Spock snuggles up and declares undying friendship to Kirk, who replies just as he does in the later movies, “That’s the way I feel about you, too, my dear friend, Spock.” And it’s partly because, as in “The Naked Time,” it’s just fun to watch crewmembers have inappropriate romances, particularly since Scotty’s is with M’Ress the cat woman (voiced by Majel Barrett, as are Chapel and the lizard-woman on Motherlode, thus implying that her voice is the sexiest thing in the universe). I start giggling whenever M’Ress starts purr-talking, and her dorky flirting with Mr. Scott is particularly amusing.

Rewatching “Mudd’s Passion” now, it’s clear that the episode was a big influence on the producers of the brilliant Star Trek parody Galaxy Quest: not only does it have the human-alien romance, the brotherly bonding, and the visit to a desert planet, but it has the epic battle with a rock monster complete with the captain doing gratuitous barrel rolls to get away. If you can overlook the vileness of Chapel testing a mind-control drug on Spock for the purpose of taking intimate advantage of him, there’s a lot to giggle about in this episode, and some of the dialogue is delightful: McCoy picking on a deadpan Spock about always quoting odds, Mudd and Spock repeating dialogue from “I, Mudd” about how Mudd says borrowed when Spock hears stole, Chapel announcing that it would be stupid of her to keep trying to hold Spock’s attention when he doesn’t respond to having her in his lap.

Then there are all of Spock’s declarations about dear, lovely Christine, and shouting that his love is in danger, and telling Kirk that his plan to distract the rock monsters is an outstandingly stupid idea. When Spock eventually regains his senses, he seems little affected by the potion’s after-effects – he neither dislikes Chapel nor avoids Kirk – though he tells Mudd that by providing a few moments of love paid for by hours of hatred, the potion is scarcely a bargain. Mudd retorts that few things in universe are perfect, which is a good motto for this episode. It’s bad, but it’s going to remain a guilty pleasure for me.

If Saldana signs for the role, she will play the wife of a bipolar husband who has gone off of his meds and has lost his job, forcing her back into the workforce. The husband would be played by Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right).

Infinitely Polar Bear, produced by J.J. Abrams, is due to begin shooting in September, before Star Trek 2.

Speaking of Star Trek 2, Vulture is reporting that the rumor is, if Saldana signs for this role, she would go “straight to a Star Trek sequel in November.”

TrekMovie.com spoke recently with writers Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who explained why it would be best to delay rather than put out an inferior product.

“We feel pretty strongly that the best version of this movie is directed by J.J. [Abrams],” said Lindelof. “And therefore we totally defer to his availability and when he wants to direct. This isn’t us passing the buck, but it is us passing the buck. Is it possible to start shooting the movie in September? Absolutely, we would totally be ready to go. But that doesn’t mean we are going to start in September, that is a question only J.J. can answer.”

“We made the commitment to each other on the first movie not to put that movie out unless we felt it was going to be the best version of the movie,” said Kurtzman. “And that meant taking our collective time. The first Trek had a release date of Christmas originally and we had to move it to the summer because it wasn’t going to be the best version, it was going to be rushed and it would have never been the movie that we put out there. Part of our responsibility to Trek is to make sure it isn’t rushed, that we take our time and do it right.’

Orci explained that a deadline for finishing the movie has not even been set. “Deadlines are great,” he said. “We haven’t had a deadline yet, and that is why we keep not finishing it. Give us a deadline and we’ll finish it. We only closed our deal with Paramount two or three months ago. So it is not just doing other things, it is ‘let’s find out when we are really going to go and then we will really get to work.’”

The writers admitted that the movie could be finished by June 29, 2012, but see no reason to rush it just to make that release date.

Although Abrams has yet to see the script for Star Trek 2, he was able to let Stern and Trek fans know how far behind the sequel was, so as mentioned during the last few weeks, Star Trek 2 will probably not be released next summer.

“We’re probably six months behind,” Abrams told Stern.

In another interview with MTV, Abrams elaborated on the delay. “I would say it’s not an impossibility to do it, but the studio agrees the most important thing is that the movie be good. No one wants to make something that makes its date but isn’t necessarily worth your time. I want to make sure that whatever we do and whenever it comes out that it’s something that people will have a great time watching.

“We’ve been discussing everything. The most important thing is how do we do something that we get excited about and that is worthy of the audience.”

No word yet on whether Abrams will direct, and he won’t commit one way or the other until he sees the script. “Without even knowing what the story is, part of me feels jealous of anyone else who gets to work with those actors—such an amazing group of actors,” he said. “But I also want to make sure I know what it is I’m being asked to direct before I do it. We’re working on the story and getting there. I’m very excited about what they’ve come up with so far.”

“As the actors, we take the scripts and we bring them to life to the absolute best of our abilities, and we leave it there,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery follows the advice that he was once given. “…someone very wise told me a long time ago a very simple statement as far as people’s opinion of me,” he said. “And that is, “In truth, your opinion of me is not my concern because, regardless of what we do from an acting standpoint, you’re going to have your opinion. You’re going to love it or you’re going to hate it, and you will have very strong reasoning to back whatever your opinion is. So, for me, just do the best job you can and leave it there.

“So, for me, we did the best work we possibly could, and hopefully we did more good than harm, and (hopefully) the fans will love us more than they hate us in the long run.”

One thing Montgomery would love to do is to be in a project that would bridge the gap between the Star Trek: Enterprise era and the original series (Abrams-version) era. “I think it would be a lot of fun,” said Montgomery. “I think if you brought in a group like us (the Enterprise cast) and mixed it with the inner mechanisms of the Star Trek (2009) world, I think it would be a complete hit with the fans – and the fans from every generation. Truly, I think for every fan that’s a fan of all of the series and all of the movies, those guys would actually love it. The fans had started to buy into us more by the fourth season of Enterprise, and I think they wanted to see more of us. It was like cutting their legs out from under them when we were canceled so abruptly as we were. And including us (in the next Star Trek feature) would give a lot of people closure.”

Last seen in the fourth season episode All the Rage, which aired last summer, Wheaton will appear in seven episodes to air in the second half of the season which begins next month.

Wheaton’s character Parrish will “butt heads” with Dr. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) for the attention of Dr. Holly Martin (Felicia Day), a “quirky Department of Defense” visitor to Eureka.

Also appearing on Eureka this summer is comic book legend Stan Lee (Spider-Man), who will make a cameo appearance in the summer premiere as an expert on gamma rays.

Like many of the actors on Enterprise, Montgomery was sad to see the series end, feeling that the show and his character had more potential that had not been explored.

“I personally thought that we had finally found our sea legs, or our space legs, if you will,” said Montgomery. “I thought by season four we’d actually hit a very nice stride. So I thought we would be around for three more seasons and do several movies, and everything.”

Had Enterprise continued, Montgomery would have liked to have seen more revealed about Mayweather’s life. “Oh, we barely scratched the surface of Travis,” he said. “I wanted to actually see and meet some of his alien girlfriends. We talked about them, but we never got to see any of them. The one girlfriend that we saw over the ninety-eight episodes was human. I was like, ‘Wait! I wanted an alien girlfriend.’” Also, I wanted to meet his sister. We had the episode (Horizon) where his father passed away, but I remember that we’d talked about Travis having other relatives, having a sister, and her having a husband. I was looking forward to actually learning more about his family.”

At times, Montgomery felt that his character didn’t get enough air time, but he knew that the series wasn’t about Mayweather. “Well, it was hard,” he said. “As an actor, of course, you want to work. So, for me, I knew what it was that I signed on for initially. The show was about the captain, the engineer and the Vulcan, and not necessarily in that order. I knew that was what I was signing on for and, for me, the bottom line is it was an honor to be a part of Star Trek, to be a part of the global lexicon, to be a part of history the way that I am.”

Montgomery is currently appearing in the VH-1 series Single Ladies.

Cho played John in 1999′s American Pie, where fans knew him best for popularizing the term “MILF,” used in reference to “Stifler’s mom” (played by Jennifer Coolidge). He also appeared in the two sequels, American Pie 2 and American Wedding.

According to a Twitter message from Thomas Ian Nicholas (Kevin Myers), Cho has begun filming scenes for American Reunion. “On the set of American Reunion with John Cho looking spiffy,” said Nicholas.

American Reunion, the fourth film in the American Pie series, will be released April 6, 2012.

The War of the Worlds game will be coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade. The game is a “is a dark and breathtaking new vision inspired by the classic H.G. Wells novel, retold as a single player, 2D action-adventure.”

Stewart will be providing narration for The War of the Worlds game. “As a young boy, I remember watching The War of the Worlds so many times I was quoting the lines,” said Stewart. “The alien invasion both terrified and fascinated me and the movie has stuck with me since then. Now, being part of this project will provide a new way for gamers around the world to experience a fresh new take on a classic.”

The War of the Worlds is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year.

The 2011 TCA Awards “recognize outstanding television programming in the 2010-2011 season, honoring both actors and producers in a variety of categories including news and information, youth, drama and comedy achievements.”Shatner was nominated for a Career Achievement Award. The other nominees in the category are:

The Captains, a documentary on the actors who have played Star Trek captains over the years on the Star Trek televised series, includes Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine.

“He’s shy,” said Shatner, referring to Pine, who played Kirk in 2009′s Star Trek XI. “So the way I started the interview, I put out a table and chairs outside the Paramount gates, and arm-wrestled with him. That was the beginning of my interview with him. I think it broke the ice, that’s for sure.”

The Captains will air on the EPIX channel on July 21.

But Greenwood, who is credited as “Cooper,” won’t be easy to spot. This is because the visual appearance of his character, the unhappy alien of Super 8, was computer-generated.

Performance capture work was a new experience for Greenwood. “It’s not your typical acting exercise at all, because you’re really the only person in this room with all these cameras in it,” explained Greenwood. “It was a very weird thing to offer up all this big emotion while … the rest of the people in the room are picking away at the craft services table,” he says. “And you never really how it will turn out because it’s all left in the hands of the artists and animators who are putting your work together.

“The other part that was really memorable was that I saw a bunch of other (big name) actors who were doing the same thing in other studios … and there we were: In one-piece Danskins with our pot bellies and saggy asses hanging outs.

“All the parts that we try so hard to hide beneath our nice clothes were all of a sudden very visible.

“Being an actor, you have to be OK with shameless … and that was it. There was nothing left to hide. It was a big naked moment …”

Plot Summary: The Enterprise crew arrives at the “Shore Leave” planet in the Omicron Delta region, where McCoy remembers seeing the White Rabbit the last time he visited. Shortly afterward, he is attacked by a pack of playing cards while relaxing at a Southern plantation, and Uhura is abducted by a flying robot. Kirk has all other crewmembers beamed back from the surface and beams down to retrieve Uhura, who is being held by the planet’s computer in its underground cave. The computer cuts off the landing party from all communication with the Enterprise and tells Uhura it plans to “turn them off,” though she manages to stall it. Evading attacks by pterodactyls that none of the landing party dreamed up, Kirk and Spock find the Caretaker’s tombstone and realize that, with the benign programmer dead, the planet’s computer has grown increasingly powerful. The computer tries to gain control of the Enterprise by beaming up its own components but Scotty and Arex are able to lock it out. Spock remembers that last time the crew visited, McCoy was taken underground after an apparently lethal injury and has McCoy inject him with a drug to knock him out so that he too can find the control room. Kirk follows him inside and, with the help of Uhura, convinces the computer that it is not a servant of humans but a partner in mutual understanding. The computer decides that this is logical and agrees to work with the visitors, allowing the crew to enjoy its shore leave.

Analysis: “Once Upon a Planet” is a pleasant yet largely forgettable episode…forgettable because one can’t shake the sense that one has seen it all before. The events that aren’t directly recycled from its predecessor, “Shore Leave,” seem borrowed from various other original series episodes like “The Ultimate Computer” and “Spectre of the Gun.” It’s cute, and it’s nice to see that when Uhura gets kidnapped by a malevolent computer, she not only keeps her cool and defends her friends but helps argue to change the computer’s unhappy ways. Plus Arex and M’Ress get a bit more to do, and Kyle reappears, and Spock once again uses logic to argue for peace, which always makes me happy. But the big blue pterodactyls aren’t much of an improvement on the flying purple dragon plants from “The Infinite Vulcan” and the Giant Kitty Cat of Doom is mostly giggle-inducing, not to mention the not-up-to-Disney-quality Alice in Wonderland animations. It’s all pretty harmless amusement, perfectly in fitting with Trek canon, it’s just not very exciting if you’re familiar with the franchise.

It’s all well and good to have sequels even if “Once Upon a Planet” is awfully reminiscent of “Shore Leave” – though perhaps when it first aired, original series reruns weren’t yet so ubiquitous that comparisons would have been inevitable. A lot of the charm of “Shore Leave” is that the audience gets to see bits about the crew’s pasts and interests not usually discussed on a starship – medieval dresses, World War II planes – and while I’m not particularly a fan of Kirk’s passive young girlfriend or stereotypical Academy tormentor, that charm is missing from “Once Upon a Planet” since it’s established early on that the planet is creating things like giant cats and dinosaurs on its own. How much more amusing if someone had been thinking of the time the crew got chased in a dungeon by a giant feline in “Catspaw,” which would be logical given that they’re talking to M’Ress, or even dreaming of flying on a pterodactyl. (Does anyone else expect Kirk to warn everyone not to think of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man?) Nobody who’s seen a handful of episodes will be surprised that McCoy fantasizes about being in the Old South or that Uhura likes to sing, so there’s no real character development, though nothing jarring either, just nice moments like Kirk expressing surprise that Spock has read something as illogical as Through the Looking Glass and McCoy telling Spock not to dictate medical dosages.

I wish the episode had been a bit longer so that the Shore Leave computer could have made more inroads into taking over the Enterprise. I always like episodes where the ship’s own computers are compromised and become a threat to the crew, and this one could have created a holodeck-like atmosphere throughout the ship, which might have been surreal and funny (pterodactyls in the corridors!). The planetary computer’s complaint that it is essentially a big toy, not allowed to grow and develop, seems reasonable enough, but its complaints are resolved awfully quickly considering that one of its initial demands is to get to spend more time with other superior computers – it doesn’t even try to reestablish the link with the Enterprise’s computer to confirm the truth of what the landing party explains about humans and computers needing each other. Instead everyone but Spock gets to have a picnic with a red dragon, while the Vulcan discusses the meaning of life with the machine that created it. Thus ends the children’s story version of “Shore Leave.”

The USS Enterprise will be a 1:350 scale model, over thirty-two inches long, detailed after the 11′ filming model used in the filming of the original series.

“We’ve been getting requests for this kit virtually since the day we started producing models,” said Tom Lowe, Round 2 president. “We’re very excited to begin development of the kit that so many Star Trek modeling fans have been clamoring for.”

According to the Round 2 press release, the kit is being offered in two editions. “The standard release of the kit will include parts to create the ‘production version’ of the ship as it appeared in the classic Star Trek television show.

“A limited Premiere Edition of the kit will be available directly from Round 2 on a pre-order basis. The Premiere Edition kit includes all parts included in the regular edition, as well as parts to make the 1st and 2nd Pilot versions of the ship as depicted in two early episodes of the television show. The Premiere Edition will be limited to 1,701 pieces and will include a serial numbered certificate of authenticity as well as special commemorative packaging. Polar Lights will also be developing a separate accessory pack for both versions of the kits that will include surface weathering decals, photo-etched parts and a light kit.”

Fans who pre-order the Premiere Edition kit will also be enrolled in the 1701 club, where they will receive a limited-edition t-shirt and exclusive development updates by email, which will include interviews and never-before-seen photos of the original filming model. This will be the only place where development updates will be reported, so club members will be the first to obtain information regarding progress on the model.

Gary Kerr, a lifelong Star Trek historian, will be assisting Round 2 with development. “Gary’s involvement in the new kit design has been a tremendous asset,” said Jamie Hood, brand manager of Polar Lights. “His extensive knowledge has allowed us to add intimate details to the model. This kit will be the most accurate representation of the ship produced since the original filming model.”

The standard release kit will be available in hobby shops and specialty stores, and the Premiere Edition kit can be pre-ordered through round2models.com. Click the thumbnail for a high-res image of the USS Enterprise.

The movie project, for which Lindelof will earn seven figures, came out of meetings with Sean Bailey, Disney production president, and senior executive Brigham Taylor.

No further details are available about 1952, but the project will encompass more than a movie, having “multiple platform aspirations.”

Lindelof will start on 1952 after Star Trek 2.

According to MTV, Abrams is involved in on-going negotiations with Paramount regarding Star Trek 2, including its production schedule. “We’re working on that right now,” he said. “I hope to have some information soon.”

That information would hopefully include news about whether Abrams will direct Star Trek 2. “I would hope so,” he said, when asked about that possibility, “but we’ll see. No decisions yet, but I look forward to having the answer soon.

So Trek fans can anticipate another Star Trek movie, as well as another round of teases, secrecy and waiting.

Takei tried to make it to Broadway via Spiderman, but now, he’s sure that his performance as Sister Mary Teriyaki in Sister Act will be the ticket to fame and fortune.

George Takei: The Road to Broadway, is an ongoing series of viral videos promoting the musical Allegiance, which will open on Broadway next year. Takei will star with Lea Salonga in the musical, described as “an epic story of love, family and heroism during the Japanese-American interment” during World War II.

Some people may enjoy trying to get around restrictions, but Pegg was not one of them and the actor worried about the repercussions had he been caught sneaking a photo.

Star Trek XI was a closed set, with the actors wearing cloaks and being ferried about furtively to keep details of the Abrams reboot from being leaked to an avid public.

A photo of Zachary Quinto had already leaked out, and Abrams was determined to keep this from happening again. But Pegg wanted to show his wife what he looked like in uniform so he snapped a picture of himself, and then he began to fret.

“I thought I was going to get arrested,” he said. “I took the picture with my phone because my wife was with me in Los Angeles and I thought I would show her the picture when I got home. She had been on the set anyway.

“But as I was leaving the Paramount lot that night, I was convinced that someone would say, ‘Excuse me, sir’… and stop me and arrest me.”

Pegg spoke about J.J. Abrams‘s secrecy in another interview with the A.V. Club Austin. “J.J.’s incredibly secretive,” said Pegg. “He’s brilliant like that. I used to try to get him to tell me stuff from Lost when we were filming, and he never would. Even though he knew I wouldn’t tell anybody. He’s the absolute soul of discretion.”

The tunnel through Chambers Wharf would cost £3.6, but the cost is not the problem, the location is. Local residents are against the possible impacts of the new super sewer.

“Of course Thames Water are addressing environmental, health and living concerns for all Londoners,” said Stewart. “What they seem to have overlooked in focusing their attention on Chambers Wharf is that those very same concerns, environment, health and living conditions may be unimaginably damaged, restrained and blighted for a significant number of years. There will be a period of time where Thames Water is planning to work 24/7 for three years – you don’t need to have an actor’s imagination to know what this would mean to us as individuals and to the neighbourhood as a whole.”

According to Thames Water, the tunnel is needed to capture thirty-nine million tons of untreated sewage which is discharged into the Thames yearly.

The sewer is not yet a done deal. “There is still a lot more work to be done, including further discussions with local communities, before we make any final decisions about the construction sites we need,” said Phil Stride, Thames Water’s head of London Tideway Tunnels.

From June 11 through September 5, those living in or near Florida will be able to experience Star Trek: The Exhibition for themselves, in The Exhibition‘s first appearance in the southeastern part of the U.S.

Kennedy Space Center also hosts Star Trek Live, which “takes audiences on an exhilarating live theatrical experience, combining special effects, audience interaction and an exploration of real space-age technology.”

The directing jobs came as a result of Rick Berman. “I blame Rick Berman for putting me through that,” said Auberjonois. “It was a real education.”

“Rick sort of nudged me into it and he was very supportive,” said Auberjonois. “I did eight of them and I’m going to say this off the top of my head, so it’s not anything that should be carved in stone, but I would say that of the ones I did maybe two of them were shows I was really proud of, where I thought I truly brought something to them. I thought maybe four of them were fine. They were exactly what was written on the page and I delivered that. Everyone was very professional and did outstanding work, so the shows were good shows.

“If one stands out, it’s probably Hippocratic Oath, which was a Dr. Bashir episode with people on this planet dying of a strange disease, and he ultimately figures out what’s going on.”

After his directing experience on Deep Space Nine, Auberjonois was asked if he would direct other shows. “I’d look at these people like they were crazy,” he said. “I had no interest in going to a show where I didn’t know the actors and the crew and the producers and everyone involved, where I wasn’t part of the whole world, so I wouldn’t really know the story. I mean, I could watch other episodes, but I wouldn’t be as immersed in anything else as I was in Deep Space Nine.”

Auberjonois is currently working on an episode of Bored to Death. “I’m playing someone named Henry, who is the father of an old girlfriend of Jason Schwartzman’s,” explained Auberjonois. “I hire him to protect a very valuable necklace that my daughter is going to be wearing. It’s a guest spot and my real reason for doing it is it’s a paid vacation and a trip to visit our son Remy, who lives in Brooklyn, and his wife, Kate, and our adorable two-and-half-year-old granddaughter, Sunde.

In addition to television work, Auberjonois is appearing at Star Trek conventions. “I’m doing a bunch of Creation events,” he said. “I started in San Francisco in May and I’ll be in Vancouver this month and also in Parsippany and Chicago. And I’ll be in Las Vegas, at the big show, in August. Nana (Visitor) and I are doing our show, Cross Our Hearts.”

Cross Our Hearts is “a collection of poetry and short stories that do not directly relate to Odo and Kira,” said Auberjonois, “but have to do with love, all different kinds of love, like romantic love and love for your dog and love for children and love for life. And then there’s a direct Odo-Kira reference at the end of it.”

The clips shows a group of children at the train station waiting for a train to arrive so that they can film a scene in their amateur movie with the train going past them, but their filmmaking is interrupted by some real life action.

One of the aspects that Auberjonois liked about Odo was knowing next to nothing about the character and watching him evolve. “So, where I thought in the beginning that I didn’t want to know where he was from and loved that it was a mystery, I also loved the fact that when we got a script – one that focused on Odo and his world – I’d learn something new that I didn’t know about the character,” said Auberjonois. “I would have to ingest it and incorporate it into this character that was being built over seven years.

When it came to Odo-Quark, Auberjonois believes that the writers saw the potential of their adversarial relationship and knew it would be often revisited. “I have a feeling that they knew the Quark-Odo would be one of the things that would be, not necessarily a cornerstone, but something that they could go back to, that was the kind of relationship between characters that Star Trek fans revel in,” he said. “So I have a feeling that there’s an element of that in the Quark-Odo relationship, because it meant the writers could refer to that very briefly and have it have meaning.

“We’d have tiny little encounters most of the time. It wouldn’t even be scenes. I would walk into the bar to do something else completely, and Quark and Odo would have an exchange, maybe only two or three lines between them, but the audience was so in tune with that relationship that they could extrapolate. And, in fact, Armin and I have commented on it over the years.”

Odo and Kira came out of Necessary Evil. “..in the end, in present time,” explained Auberjonois, [Odo] understands that Kira was responsible for this, that she was an underground fighter. The writers wrote in that scene at the end that they were in Odo’s office and he looks at her. I can’t remember the exact words of how they described him looking at her, but it was clear that he understood that this person who was his only real friend on the station has betrayed him in some way. I don’t know what it was that I did or if it was how it was shot, but the next day, when they were looking at the dailies, the writers said, ‘Oh my God, look, Odo loves Kira.’ And they went with that.”

But in the end, Odo left Kira and returned to the Great Link. “If anything could be called inevitable in a series as out-of-this-world as Deep Space Nine, that was inevitable,” said Auberjonois. “The one thing I knew, by the time we’d explored the relationship with Kira and started to know who the Founders were, was that that had to be the way it was going to end for them and for Odo specifically.

“So I was completely satisfied with it because I thought, ‘This is the way it has to be.’ It’s the classic, poignant ending. It’s people making great sacrifices for the greater good.”

Like many Americans, Nimoy doesn’t like to see the never-ending conflict in the Middle East. “I reach out to you as someone who is troubled to see the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continue apparently without an end in sight,” he said.

“In fact, there is an end in sight,” said Nimoy. “It’s known as the two-state solution–a secure, democratic Israel as the Jewish State alongside an independent Palestinian state. Even Israel’s nationalist Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, has come to see this as the shape of the future. The problem is how to reach that end point. It’s something we should be concerned about–not only as world citizens, but as Americans.

“You might recall the episode in the original Star Trek series called, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. Two men, half black, half white, are the last survivors of their peoples who have been at war with each other for thousands of years, yet the Enterprise crew could find no differences separating these two raging men.

“But the antagonists were keenly aware of their differences–one man was white on the right side, the other was black on the right side. And they were prepared to battle to the death to defend the memory of their people who died from the atrocities committed by the other.

“The story was a myth, of course, and by invoking it I don’t mean to belittle the very real issues that divide Israelis and Palestinians. What I do mean to suggest is that the time for recriminations is over. Assigning blame over all other priorities is self-defeating. Myth can be a snare. The two sides need our help to evade the snare and search for a way to compromise.

“The Middle East is only getting more tumultuous. The upheavals throughout the region show that what happens in the Middle East can’t help but affect us in the United States. This year, we’ve seen oil prices rise sharply and America become involved militarily in Libya. The cost to American lives and our economy continues to rise at a time when unemployment and deficits are sapping our country’s strength.”

The game will put the player in the Star Trek XI universe, where they can take on the roles of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.

“Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced,” said Tom Lesinski, president of Paramount Digital Entertainment. “Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. The game’s story will be written by Marianne Krawczyk (God of War), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and will be developed by Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, The Darkness II).

“The next thing we’re working on,” said Abrams, “and hopefully we’ll be able to pass information out sooner or later, is the next Star Trek.”

As has been reported, the proposed summer 2012 release date might not be set in stone. “We’re working really hard to get that movie made as soon as possible,” said Abrams, “but we don’t want to rush anything.

“The worst thing we could possible do would be to put something into production to make a release date instead of a great movie.

“I care much more that it be good than it be ready. I’m, obviously doing everything I can to make sure that schedules don’t get screwed up. But I don’t think anyone wants a movie on time that’s not worth your time.”

Will Star Trek 2 be released in 3D? “I’m not yet considering it,” said Abrams, “but you know, I haven’t gotten any phone call from people in suits. I know what’s good for me.”

Abrams spoke about his latest project, Super 8, which releases this Friday, saying that there is a Star Trek “Easter egg” item of interest in the film. “Leonard Nimoy is in the movie somewhere if you can find him,” he said.

Plot Summary: Sent to the galactic center to see whether matter is being created there, the Enterprise enters a matter-energy whirlpool. Life support fails and the crew is dying when a creature that looks like a faun appears and restores power. The creature introduces himself as Lucien and takes the senior crewmembers to the planet’s surface, where they find people who never age and can make castles out of thin air. Lucien explains that when his people passed through the dimensional portal that the Enterprise also crossed to reach his world, his people found Earth and became known to humans as wizards and magicians. Suddenly Lucien warns them to conceal themselves and returns them to the Enterprise, where Spock discovers that through the power of his own will, he can perform telekinetic feats. But the crew is brought back to the planet by angry people dressed as Puritans from Massachusetts, where they are placed in stocks and told that they will be tried for crimes like the Salem Witch Trials, which led to the burnings of several of Lucien’s people on Earth. Because Spock is not human, leader Asmodeus allows him to defend the humans. Spock asks Kirk whether humans have changed since the events in Salem, and Kirk testifies that humans now try to understand and respect all life forms, as the records aboard the Enterprise prove. Agreeing that humans pose no threat, Asmodeus says that Lucien – once known on Earth as Lucifer – must still be punished for contacting the ship, but Kirk argues that Lucien is an intelligent being and uses his newfound magic powers to defend Lucien. Asmodeus says the trial was a test of the humans’ true intentions and agrees with Spock that Kirk’s compassion for Lucien is proof that humans have changed.

Analysis: While some episodes of the animated series, like “Yesteryear,” are so good that they’re considered to be Star Trek canon, other episodes, like “The Magicks of Megas-Tu,” are so bad that fans either try to pretend they don’t exist or put them on late at night at Star Trek conventions to play drinking games and laugh uproariously. I will admit that I never made it all the way through this episode before, though I did read the Alan Dean Foster adaptation of the story in Star Trek Log Three. How bad is “The Magicks of Megas-Tu”? Let’s just say that the script – in terms of science, characterization, even factual details of Earth history – is so terrible that the candy-cane-striped watermelon planet at the center of the galaxy looks good by comparison. I wish I could say “this episode will be fun for fans of fantasy or Harry Potter or Magic: The Gathering,” but really, I think it’s only fun for people like my younger son, who thinks Star Trek is pretty ridiculous at the best of times and enjoys it most when it’s so screechingly awful that everyone in the room is laughing at it.

I’m trying to think of something defensible about “The Magicks of Megas-Tu” and coming up blank. The animation is seizure-inducing; the Enterprise passes through Fourth of July fireworks to reach the center of the galaxy, where it is trapped by the sort of swirly effects that accompany Heffalumps and Woozles in Winnie-the-Pooh cartoons. Then the crew ends up in a version of Salem populated by Pilgrims from two generations earlier. I’m not sure why Spock bothers with a defense when he could simply point out that the facts prove the Magicks were never really in Salem, since the victims there were hanged, not burned, and since three times as many women as men were executed in Salem yet Asmodeus and his fellow leaders all appear to be men (the women on the planet are shown as busy buying potions for eternal youth and beauty, though oddly there are crones who apparently spend their time selling these potions instead of being young and beautiful). I won’t get started on the suggestion that the all too real bigotry and misogyny of the Salem Puritans might have been justified by the presence of meddlesome magical aliens, because guess what – the Devil really was among the witches in this version of the story! Kirk tells Asmodeus he isn’t interested in legend, yet he’s willing to perpetuate this absurd falsehood.

As for the galaxy being created by a central explosion that may still be creating new matter, that isn’t nearly as incredible as the theological resolution. Kirk does what I’ve never seen Jesus do in any Christian revisionist fable – he saves Lucifer! He’s willing to risk his own life to do so, to recite “I do believe in fairies, I do, I do,” and to cast Magic Missile and let the Heart of the Cards guide him. (I can’t take credit for all that analysis; my kids were shouting those suggestions while Kirk was dueling onscreen.) I’m not sure whether this makes Kirk a messiah or a demon or what, but I wish he’d been around to save Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy, because Viggo was a much sexier Satan than Lucien. Oh dear, I’m clearly going to hell, but I knew that already, because I was told by some ultra-religious nutters that being a Harry Potter fan was the equivalent of devil worship, and with Star Trek confirming that all previous reports of magic on Earth actually arise from extraterrestrial interference headed up by Lucifer himself, they have a point.

I’m going to go back to pretending this episode never existed in a moment, but first I must pause and contemplate an obvious parallel that could have been exploited. Kirk will make another trip to the center of the galaxy in another installment that’s widely considered only marginally canonical, meeting – and destroying – God in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. (How did William Shatner not remember “The Magicks of Megas-tu” while working on the movie’s screenplay, and not realize it was going to be a very bad idea?) Just think how differently things might have gone had Kirk remembered this previous trip to Sha Ka Ree and realized from the start that God was just the devil in disguise. But if he did recall it, he probably wrote it off as a bad drug trip, which is what it looks like on the screen.
